Topic: Why Mentoring Our Girls Matter

In 2020 I read a life-changing book titled, Start With The WHY by Simon Sinek. This was the right season for me to read this book. Although I initially purchased the book to help guide me in developing my nonprofit organization, FASTell Girl Model2Mentor Program, reading this book brought me to a full and complete circle of where healing begins. After close to a decade of treating my emotional outbursts, suicidal ideation, and chronic depressive episodes, I found the key to helping recondition my response to life and how I showed up in life. The key to healing was found in asking, WHY.

3 Ways Trauma Shows Up In Our Girls

During the ages of 0 to 5 years old our brains go through the most life-impacting phase of development. It is during the ages of 0 to 5, that our brains experience the most extensive amount of development, structure, and shaping. Our life experiences during these years attribute greatly to the person we become.

Because this is a time when our brains are developing the most, the life experiences that we go through, have a lasting impact on how we show up in life and how we respond to life.  It is through these experiences our brains begin to condition a belief system of how we perceived those experiences.

Those lasting impacts show up in the following:

  • How we see and speak to ourselves
  • How we see and speak to the world around us
  • How we see and speak to the relationships we are connected to

Our understanding of ourselves, the world around us, and the relationships we develop with others all derive from our early childhood experiences in life and how those experiences were cultivated. If a child is being raised in an abusive relationship, and/or in an abusive environment, that child starts to shape their identity of who they are through those experiences and exposure.  That child will learn to show up in life and respond to life based on how those experiences and those connected to those experiences taught them.

Principle Of A Gem...Awareness

I have challenged myself and my board of directors to implement a strategy developed to bring awareness to the mission of FASTell Girl Model2Mentor Program. FASTell GIrl Model2Mentor Program was formally established in 2020. I began forming this impactful and preventative program during a phase of intensive therapeutic treatment for myself.

Culturally we develop a mindset of treating behavior. Typically, that treatment comes with forms of discipline towards that behavior. Treating behavior does not work the vast majority of the time. And it especially does not work for those who have a strong belief system behind “Why” they do what they do. This brings me to where treatment starts. Treatment starts with WHY.

Mission Forward Model2Mentor

FASTell Girl Model2Mentor Programs’ mission is to equip adolescent girls with behavior management skills to ACCESS a higher quality of life. Suicide rates in adolescent girls have been increasing drastically since approximately 2011.

Professionals don’t necessarily know why rates are increasing so fast, however, they do contribute to the increasing numbers of

depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation (hopelessness) to the rise in cases.

It is the belief of FASTell Girl that equipping these young ladies with healthy social-emotional learning and mentorship, gives them hope beyond what Adverse Childhood Experiences have shaped their belief system about their lives and themselves.

Join FASTell Girl Model2Mentor Program on Saturday, September 10, 2022, as we host our first annual virtual Walk-A-Thon to raise money for our fall 2022 and spring 2023 cycles.

You can also support our mission by purchasing one of our GOAL GETTER journals that are designed to help guide you through depression anxiety and feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness.
